How to Handle a Fracture Before Reaching Hospital

Act Fast, Stay Safe!

A fracture—a broken bone—can be painful and alarming. But knowing how to respond before reaching the hospital can make a big difference in recovery and reduce complications.

1. Stay Calm and Assess

First, keep the injured person calm.
Avoid moving the affected area unnecessarily.
Check for bleeding, swelling, or deformity.

2. Immobilize the Area

Use a splint or a makeshift support (e.g., a stick or rolled newspaper) to prevent movement.
Tie gently with cloth, avoiding tight knots.
If it’s a limb, immobilize the joints above and below the break.

3. Apply Ice

Wrap ice in a cloth and place it on the injury to reduce swelling and pain.
Never apply ice directly to the skin.

4. Control Bleeding (if any)

If there’s an open wound, cover with a clean cloth and apply gentle pressure.
Do not push exposed bones back inside.

5. Avoid Food or Drink

In case surgery is needed, it’s best not to give the injured person anything to eat or drink.

6. Get Medical Help Immediately

Call an ambulance or rush to the nearest hospital.
Keep the injured part elevated if possible, and avoid any further movement.

What NOT to Do

  • ❌ Don’t try to reset the bone
  • ❌ Don’t move the person unless necessary
  • ❌ Don’t ignore the injury or delay medical care
