When the Bone Breaks Through the Skin
An open fracture, also called a compound fracture, is a serious injury where the broken bone pierces through the skin and is exposed. This type of fracture carries a high risk of infection and requires immediate medical attention.
What Causes It?
Open fractures usually occur due to:

- Heavy impact or crush injuries
Why Is It Dangerous?
- Infection risk: The bone and surrounding tissues are exposed to dirt and bacteria.

- Slower healing: It takes longer to recover compared to closed fractures.
Symptoms to Watch For
- Bone visibly sticking out of the skin
- Severe bleeding and swelling
- Intense pain
- Inability to move the affected part

What to Do Immediately
- Cover the wound with a clean cloth
- Don’t try to push the bone back inside
- Immobilize the area
- Call for emergency medical help
Treatment Options
